Make Up Air is a term used in the HVAC industry. Ventilating is the process of changing or replacing air in any space to control temperature or remove moisture, odors, smoke, heat, dust and airborne bacteria. This includes both the exchange of air to the outside as well as circulation of air within the building. The two types are natural and mechanical/forced. Ventilation is used to remove unpleasant smells and excessive moisture, introduce outside air, and to keep interior building air circulating, to prevent stagnation of the interior air.
Federal regulations have mandated requirements to maintaining acceptable indoor air quality in buildings. This has required that even when the HVAC system is not running to cool or heat the ventilation must continue to run and add fresh air into the building. In the process the incoming air is only filtered.
The name Roof Top Units (RTU) identifies the location of the HVAC unit. In most all commercial box style buildings have these types of units. In the summer, when temperatures are hot, the roof of most all buildings are even hotter by 17 degrees and in some locations even higher. USA Green Solutions has posted an article in a study with NASA call Urban Heat Island Effect. In short this article explains the rising heat effect in larger cities.
The largest energy user is the commercial HVAC Roof Top Units. There are ways to Retro Fit these units and enhance the efficiency by 60%. One of the additions that can be added is a Make Up Air Pre Cooler.
